Clayton Library Makes Halloween Magic from Community Costumes

Home Posted on September 08, 2025

The Halloween Costume Swap at Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library looks a little different this year. Instead of one day, the library is accepting new or gently-used costumes throughout September and October at its temporary location (446 East Second Street). Families can also browse the collection and take costumes home, making the swap flexible and accessible for everyone.

Members of the community can drop off cleaned costumes at the library during regular hours from Monday through Saturday. There is no limit to the number of costumes a person can donate. The library is accepting all sizes and ages, from infants to teens. Donations can include Halloween masks, costume accessories, candy buckets, and treat bags as well, but please avoid items that are stained or torn.

“We are excited to offer the Halloween Costume Swap in this new format,” said Library Manager Mel Poole. “By spreading the program across two months, we can connect with more families and give them the flexibility to participate when it works best for them. This approach helps remove barriers to the joy of dressing up, and it allows us to create special, memorable experiences that children and families can carry with them long after Halloween.”

Children and teens can try on and select one costume each, helping the library maintain an organized swap and making it easy for everyone to participate.

“Beyond providing costumes, the Halloween Costume Swap reflects the library’s larger mission of supporting families and connecting them with resources,” added Poole. “It reinforces the library as a space where people can access what they need and feel included in community life.”
