World Water Day 2023

WORLD WATER DAY 2023

The Town of Clayton is joining the NC Clean Water Education Partnership (CWEP) to recognize World Water Day.

In honor of today, we encourage you to take a moment to learn more about CWEP's mission and explore the educational resources available at www.nc-cleanwater.com/sediment

CWEP emphasizes the importance of keeping our waterways clean. One way we can do this is by preventing sediment pollution. Below is a list of actions you can take to be a part of the solution against pollution:

1. Cover bare dirt in your yard with grass, plants, mulch, or gravel. When soil is exposed, rain carries sediment into streams. Mulch, plants, and gravel keep soil in place, so our water stays clear.

2. When planting new grass, cover grass seed with straw. The straw helps retain moisture and protects the seeds from birds.

3. When planting new grass or plants, choose native plants and grasses. These plants and grasses are hardier and keep soil in place better than non-native plants.

4. Consider installing a decorative retaining wall in your yard to prevent sediment erosion.

In collaboration with residential efforts, like the ones listed above, the Town of Clayton's Environmental Compliance Specialist inspects construction sites throughout our Town to ensure that contractors are keeping dirt out of the streets and out of our creeks.

While under construction, silt fences and filter socks are utilized to contain exposed soil and prevent any sediment pollution from entering storm drains.

Development sites are required to implement Stormwater Control Measures. These permanent structural devices are designed, constructed, and maintained to remove pollutants like sediment and nutrients from stormwater runoff before it reaches our waterways.

Although we recognize World Water Day once a year, these efforts are prioritized year-round. We hope you will join us in our efforts and remember CWEP's motto when it comes to preventing sediment pollution:

Slow it down.

Spread it out.

Soak it in.
