Clayton Police Department's Patrol Unit Builds Trust with Every Call

Home Posted on May 12, 2025

National Police Week is a time to honor the men and women who put on the badge and dedicate their lives to protecting others. It is also a chance to reflect on the importance of public safety, community partnerships, and the everyday efforts - big and small - that make a difference.

Here in Clayton, the Town is taking this week to recognize the heart behind the uniform. Its police officers are not only first responders but dedicated neighbors, mentors, and advocates who work tirelessly to support and protect the people they serve.

When Officer Jonathan Boyce starts his shift with the Clayton Police Department, he knows every day could bring something different. As part of the Patrol Division, he is often one of the first people residents meet when they need help.

"I never know what the day is going to bring, but I’m always ready to face whatever comes my way,” said Officer Boyce. “Whether it’s a routine call or something unexpected, I take pride in being there for the community when they need us most."

With nearly five years of law enforcement experience, Officer Boyce has been with the Clayton Police Department for two and a half years. His career began in Smithfield, and now he lives just outside of Clayton where he is committed to the safety and well-being of the Town and its residents.

Before transitioning into law enforcement, Officer Boyce spent nearly a decade in the corporate world. However, his desire to make a positive impact never wavered.

“It was something that stayed in the back of my mind,” he said. “Once my wife finished school, we decided it was time for a change, and I knew I wanted to do something meaningful.”

As part of the Patrol Division, Officer Boyce embraces the variety each day brings. Whether responding to an emergency or attending a community event, he strives to keep the people of Clayton secure while building lasting connections. His positive interactions with children, such as handing out badge stickers, reflect his belief in the power of community relationships.

"When they light up after getting a badge sticker, it reminds me of how I used to see police officers when I was young. Like real-life superheroes," he shared.

Officer Boyce believes strong community ties are more important than ever, and that sense of responsibility and compassion drives how he approaches each day. Whether on patrol or at a community event, he expressed his approach is about showing up for others and offering reassurance, guidance, or simply a smile.

“It is up to us to build that trust,” he said. “We cannot expect people to do it for us. The more we show up in a positive way, the better chance we have of building those bridges.”

Beyond the badge, Officer Boyce says he values the bond that he shares with his fellow officers. This strong sense of camaraderie is crucial in a profession where teamwork is imperative in facing the unpredictable challenges of each shift.

“I wouldn’t hesitate to go into gunfire for them because that’s what they do for me,” he emphasized.

His approach to the job is clear: it’s about staying focused and equipped for whatever challenges may come. “I try to stay alert and prepared,” he said. “I do not dwell on fear. If I did, I probably wouldn’t stay in this job.”

For Officer Boyce, he says it’s all about helping others and being there for the community. This commitment is shared by the entire Clayton Police Department where every officer works toward building trust and making a lasting impact.
